BC Museums Association received funding support from Canadian Heritage under the Canadian Arts & Heritage Sustainability Program (CAHSP), in 2004-05 for the initiative: Building Member Capacity in BC: The Best Practices Module Development Project.
The goal was to research, compile and develop a series of Best Practices reference modules designed to assist member institutions in reaching their full potential in all essential elements of museum governance, operations and collections management.
An initial series of 10, 2500-word, quick-reference modules and supporting Glossary would be made readily available to members through BCMA's website for online reference, or for printing and distributing to staff or volunteers, as desired. Content could also be used as the bases for future Regional Workshop Series events throughout BC, for conference presentations and staff or volunteer orientation.
A Request for Qualifications was issued to BC's professional community based on the initial, proposed set of modules. The objective was to promote the sharing of expertise, inherent in BC's rich museums community. Draft modules submitted by the selected contributors were vetted by Bill Barkley, as the project's Museums Advisor, and Linda Eversole, Project Coordinator. Following several revisions, the final drafts were formatted as unalterable PDF's for online reference.
A key component of BCMA's Best Practices Modules Project is the online User Survey, which members are urged to complete in order to evaluate this initial series of modules and to help direct development of a proposed second series of modules. Take the Best Practices Survey now.
