& BC Arts Council Plenary to "Survivor" Schedule
In the shadow of severe Provincial funding cuts, the BCMA has added to "Survivor Osoyoos" this prime opportunity for the BCAC to update BC's museums and art galleries on funding and agency issues, and to field questions from "Survivors" on 12:00noon - 2:00pm, Friday, October 16 at the Sonora Community Centre in Osoyoos, BC.

BCMA Rallies Members vs Direct Access
In response to media reports and member inquiries about a "freeze" on Direct Access grants, the BCMA urged Institutional Members & Direct Access program clients to write to Minister Coleman to articulate the programs affected and impact the freeze or loss of Direct Access funding will have.

COTA Responds to Tourism BC Dissolution
The Council of Tourism Associations in BC has issued a formal response to the August 17 announcement that Tourism BC has been dissolved and will be "brought into" the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and the Arts.

The BCMA is an active member of COTA, on behalf of the Heritage Tourism Alliance of BC initiative, and has participated in a series of recent conference calls to assess recent Provincial announcements regarding the impact of HST and Tourism BC.

Conference 2010 Host
Winning Bid Announced
Council formally announces that the new Nanaimo Museum,
in conjunction with the Vancouver Island Conference Centre
(at left), has successfully bid to host Conference 2010 in
Nanaimo, BC on October 27-30, 2010.
A first ever bidding process, including a host survey & site
visits in June culminated in Council's selection meeting on
July 23. Although Conference 2004 was held in Nanaimo, the
VICC, including the new museum, was a mere hole in the ground, but now offers
modern conference facilities.

HTA forms steering Executive Committee
The Heritage Tourism Alliance (HTA) of BC has formed a steering executive committee for Year Two of the "History & Heritage Sector Marketing Strategy" initiative under Tourism BC's Experiences BC investment program.
Rick Goodacre (Heritage BC), Jennifer Iredale (Heritage Branch), Jan Ross (private sector heritage property managers - Emily Carr House), Heather Boyd (Tourism BC) & Jim Harding, (BCMA) will provide support & direction for HTA's Heritage Tourism Liaison, Tiffany Gyles, including contracts, budget management, & setting strategic marketing initiative priorities. First order of business will be renewal of the Heritage Tourism Liaison's contract.

75 BC150 Projects Funded, Programs Conclude
BCMA administered Provincial funding for 75 BC local history exhibits and special projects totalling $650,000 over 2007 & 2008, delivered under three programs: BC150: Local Museums Program (39 projects), and BC150 Project Exhibits for the BC150 Secretariat (Ministry of Tourism, Sport and the Arts); and the BC150: Celebrating Influential BC Women, Seniors & Elders program (36 projects) under the former Ministry of Community Development.
Of these, 24 portable BC150 community exhibits produced were funded to travel to Victoria, BC for public exhibit at the Royal BC Museum, in conjunction with the BCMA award-winning Free Spirit Project, during Conference 2008 last November.
BCMA wishes to congratulate those museums, art galleries and heritage institutions that undertook, and have successfully completed their BC150 projects, which have further demonstrated the vital storytelling role our sector plays.

Conference Hosts for 2010-2012 Named
(Feb. '09) - Council announced Host institutions and
locations for BCMA's annual provincial Conference for
the years 2010 through 2012:
2010: Nanaimo Museum & Vancouver Island Convention Centre, Nanaimo, BC;
2011: Canadian Museum of Rail Travel, Cranbrook, BC (joint Conference with the
Alberta Museums Association (AMA);
2012: Kamloops Museum, Kamloops, BC (200th anniversary of the founding of
the fur trade fort & part of year-long celebrations).
Actual Conference weeks will be confirmed with hosts & announced.
The 2010 Host will be announced in June 2009, following site visits.
"Expressions of Interest” (EOI) Invited for Conference 2013 & Beyond
Institutional Members wanting to bring BCMA’s annual provincial Conference to their region in 2013, or over the years following, are invited to submit their EOI as soon as possible…

BCMA Endowment Fund Climbs to over $75,000
BCMA has increased its Endowment Fund by $18,566 in 2008-09 with $10,341 raised this Fall and at Conference 2008; and an 82% match from the BC Arts Renaissance Fund, administered by the Vancouver Foundation, increasing the BCMA Endowment Fund to $76,360.94, held in
trust by the Vancouver Foundation. BCMA's Development Committee's initial campaign goal is $100,000 for the Campaign's first two years.
Council's Development Committee wishes to thank all donors and sponsors who have contributed to the BCMA Endowment Fund to date. A third and final application to the BC Arts Renaissance Fund has been subject to re-investment in the BC Arts Renaissance Fund by the Province, which has not been forthcoming, to date. BCMA will continue efforts to build the endowment fund as a long term sustainability initiative.
